Gold Medalists Dalhausser/Rogers advance to semifinals

AVP Press Release

Despite an almost two-hour rain delay, Main Draw play continued Saturday at the AVP Crocs Tour Ocean City Open presented by Malibu. Reigning Olympic beach volleyball gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers and fellow top seeds and Olympians Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs advanced to Sunday’s Final Four.

Dalhausser/Rogers beat eighth-seeded Anthony Medel and Hans Stolfus, 17-21, 21-18, 15-13, in a hard-fought three game brawl, and fourth-seeded John Mayer and Jeff Nygaard, 21-15, 21-14 in a rain-soaked quarterfinal match.

Dalhausser/Rogers will play the winner of a Contender’s Bracket quarterfinal between fifth-seeded Matt Olson/Kevin Wong and seventh-seeded Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings for the chance to advance to their sixth championship match in seven AVP Crocs Tour events thus far in 2009.

Top-seeded women’s team Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs also retained their top spot and moved into the semifinals. They started their day with a 21-9, 21-11 rout of eigth-seeded Jenny Kropp and Barbra Fontana, then moved on to defeat fourth-seeded Carrie Dodd and Dianne DeNecochea 21-18, 22-20.

Like their counterparts on the men’s side, Branagh/Youngs will play the winner of a Contender’s Bracket quarterfinal between third-seeded Lisa Rutledge/Brooke Hanson and fifth-seeded Annett Davis/Jenny Johnson Jordan to advance to Sunday’s final. Branagh and Youngs have won five of six AVP Crocs Tour events in 2009 and have only dropped a single match.

Second seeds on the women’s side Jennifer Kessy and April Ross also moved on undefeated, while second-seeded men Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal were sent to the Contender’s Bracket by Fuerbringer/Jennings. After a win against 13th-seeded Will Strickland and Aaron Wachtfogel, Gibb and Rosenthal remain in the hunt for the Final Four and will play Mayer/Nygaard in a must-win match at 9 a.m. Sunday.

The AVP Crocs Tour Ocean City Open presented by Malibu is taking place on the beach in Ocean City through Sunday.
